Our ethos

I have been trained in Montessori education and run the afterschool workshops based on these principles;

based on a child-centred approach, valuing the enjoyment of the process, having fun, and seeing where it takes each of us as individuals; where children are encouraged to grow as able and independent young people and take responsibility in caring for their environment.

“You make everyone feel they belong, comfortable and want to return again and again. “

- Claire (parent) February 2019

Timings

As we arrive, we can help ourselves to drinks and snacks, and choose from a wide range of "chill-out" activities (this can include creating straight away if that's what we'd like). This allows us all to relax and our minds to have a bit of a rest after a busy day at school, but leaving us plenty of time to create! Depending on when the children arrive, it is flexible as to when we start the “main activity” but it’s normally around 4pm.

Example workshops

We use materials such as clay, Lino, wool, glass and wax. We have the opportunity to use high quality materials and equipment, including access to a printing press, and to have their glass creations fired in the studio's kiln.

  • wet felting

  • clay work

  • fused glass

  • mixed media collages

  • batik

  • needle felting

  • embroidery

  • collage

  • quilling

  • printmaking and more!

FAQs

How is the Montessori approach to learning used in the afterschools?

Click here for a summary of the six key principles that I use in the studio:

My child’s school finishes late, will they be too late to join the workshop?

Children can arrive anytime from 3:30pm, but most children arrive later because of their school’s finishing time. We don't tend to start the workshop itself till more like 4pm. It also gives children a chance to relax before we start e.g. have a snack/finish a project from the week before/use their sketchbook/play a game.

Can my son/daughter have a trial session?

Absolutely! If your son/daughter hasn’t attended an afterschool club with us before, you are more than welcome to book a single ‘trial workshop’ to see if they enjoy it! If they decide to continue we can then sort payment out for the rest of the half-term.

What if my child has an allergy?

You will be asked to complete a Personal Details Form which contains space for you to write any relevant medical information, including allergies. If any details change, please contact me so it can be updated. You may be asked to complete a Food Allergy Plan.

Please note that the studio is based in our family home and we have 2 pet cats who may come into the studio. If this is a problem, or if you have any concerns, please let me know.
